Research Security Training
What is Research Security Training?
Research Security Training helps members of the research community understand their responsibilities for protecting the integrity and security of the U.S. research enterprise while supporting open and collaborative research.
Federal research agencies have implemented Research Security Training requirements in response to federal research security requirements, including National Security Presidential Memorandum 33 (NSPM-33) and the CHIPS and Science Act. Training addresses topics such as research security, disclosure requirements, international research activities, cybersecurity, export controls, and recognizing and managing potential research security risks.
Research Security Training requirements continue to evolve across federal agencies. Requirements may vary by sponsor, including who must complete training and when training must be completed.
Research Security Training at UT Austin
The University of Texas at Austin requires individuals named on federal proposals who are subject to Research Security Training requirements to complete training prior to proposal submission and annually thereafter.
UT's institutional requirement provides a consistent approach across federal sponsors while helping researchers meet evolving federal Research Security Training requirements. One annual completion satisfies the training requirement for all federal sponsors.
Who Needs to Complete the Training?
Who must complete Research Security Training varies by federal sponsor. Depending on the agency, training may be required for:
- Principal Investigators (PIs)
- Co-PIs and Co-Investigators
- Project Directors
- Senior/Key Personnel
- Other project personnel, as defined by the agency
At a minimum, UT Austin requires training for all senior/key personnel named on federal proposals. For each agency's requirements, see the Federal Agency Research Security Training Requirements Matrix below.
