Electronics
Electronics research is the control and manipulation of electrons or related quantities such as spin for information processing, energy applications, and sensing. The Microelectronics Research Center has a long history of leading electronics research to push the bounds of signal processing, sensing, and computing, such as atomically-small computing blocks, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), quantum computing, hardware-aware neural networks and deep learning, energy-efficient intelligence, neuromorphic computing, spintronics, and ferroelectrics. Current research in electronics includes:
- Development of new device and integrated circuit structures
- Advanced component development and process modeling for modern electronic systems
- Study of electron transport and quantum properties of small geometry devices and the physics of scaled and low-dimensional devices
- Device processing including diffusion, lithography, rapid thermal processing, plasma etching, remote plasma, and thermal chemical vapor deposition of silicon and related films
- Advanced crystal growth of compound semiconductor materials, including III-V multiple heterojunction structures, employing MBE and MOCVD
- Advanced metrology for semiconductor materials and devices; and new approaches to device packaging and interconnects
